How Long Do Persian Rugs Last?

Shopping for a Persian rugs can be as overwhelming as it is interesting, given the wide range of handwoven rugs available in a stunning range of colors, designs, and sizes. When it comes to Persian rugs, how long should you expect them to last? When purchasing a genuine hand-knotted Persian rug, this is among the most frequently asked questions.

Persian rugs are known for their magnificence, durability, and exquisite design. They can preserve their quality and condition for decades if carefully maintained. Many generations have gladly treasured and preserved some of the most spectacular pieces. If you're interested in collecting these carpets as artworks, there are a few things you should know.

City Rugs vs. Tribal Rugs

Firstly, it's important to understand that Persian rugs are broken down into one of two major categories: tribal and city. It’s generally easy to differentiate between the two since each category boasts distinct features.

Tribal Rugs

Tribal rugs are known for their bright colors and loose weaving, with as small as 50 knots per square inch. The majority of tribal rugs feature bright, basic geometrical patterns. Complex patterns are noticeably absent. Due to the apparent looser weave, the variety of designs generated is limited. Artisans that specialize in tribal carpet weaving often take hand-spun wool from their sheep, and the colors are made from the leaves and roots of native plants.

City Rugs

On the other hand, City Persian carpets consist of more significant knot counts and are more detailed and complex. Weavers may create sophisticated designs that are far more elaborate and complex because of the enhanced knot density. Some of the more well-known Persian city rugs include Kashans, Kermans, Qums, and Isfahans. Weavers in these towns follow sophisticated, curved designs designed on paper by royal craftsmen. The color schemes are almost as intricate as the patterns themselves. It takes a significant amount of time to make one of these rugs.

How Long Do Authentic Persian Rugs Last

A genuine Persian rug can last for over a century with proper care and maintenance. The materials used and the manufacturing method are key to their long life workmanship. Some of the tougher rugs can last for centuries, even when used in high-traffic spaces.
