How Are Persian Rugs Made?

Persian rug has long been a mainstay in the interiors of the elite and creative, as one of the most famous and treasured items of Iranian culture. Fascinate yourself by learning the inventive methods it takes to produce these intricate embellishment of art.

The lavish vintage persian rugs were previously handwoven by experienced weavers using dyes and premium silk. However, in our contemporary period, similar rugs are now produced in bulk by machinery using cost-effective materials and techniques.

The majority of handmade Persian rugs need a time-consuming and laborious weaving procedure. The procedure might take a few months for 8x10 Persian rug size and bigger.

The first step in rug weaving is to lay down a foundation of warps. Warp are vertical strands of cotton, sheep wool or silk that traverse along the length of the rug. Weavers feed wool in between the warps, starting from the bottom and tying weft knots on every one of them. It takes teamwork of three or more craftsmen to tie more than thousand knots per square inch of the authentic Persian Rugs.

Designers sketch the rug's pattern (also known as cartoon) so that weavers can follow along. The complex kaleidoscopic patterns are then produced by stringing the loosely heaped silk or coloured wool knots around consecutive neighbouring warp strands.

As the base spreads in rows, the woven knots produce the rug pile. With shoots of weft (horizontal threads) passing between each row of knots, the rows are fastened securely.

Treading is performed that entails forming loops out of all the dangling threads on each end. Treading creates a beautiful effect along the sides that mimics microscopic rope curls and braid patterns in rugs.

The rug is washed, dried, and stretched when the weaving is completed to get rid of leftover material.

With this final touch, the handmade Persian rugs; the emblem of royalty is all set to uplift the aesthetics of the room it unrolls in..
